Autumn creates space for growth

With fall comes change.

While change is constant, in autumn it’s uniquely pronounced. Leaves, having grown gradually throughout spring and summer, are suddenly changing color. The first air of autumn cuts through the warmth of departing summer.

It’s a natural time to consider what we might want to change within ourselves. Is there a memory, a recurring thought or feeling you want to let go of? Are there unproductive habits or patterns that need adjusting?

This can feel like a big undertaking and it’s human to resist it. But change is also freedom, a step toward peace.

Consider a challenging memory, one that rattles your confidence or leaves you feeling sad. You might not be able to change the memory, but you can change your relationship to it. What did it teach you? How did it shape who you are today? How might other people recall the memory? In addition to shifting your mindset, you can also use breathing and meditation to slow down any physical reactions you still hold.

This autumn cleaning and release might make the introspective nature of fall and winter a little more comfortable. It also prepares us for growth and the fresh starts and new goals that come with the new year and spring.

Embrace the change. And if you ever need a break, consider a grounding exercise. This could be a walk outdoors, or sipping from a warm cup of tea–anything that helps connect you to the moment.
